Leighanna Light

   Leighanna Light is an art instructor, thingmaker, bookmaker and figurative assemblage artist. Her background is in fine arts and photography, and she has been teaching art workshops for the past 15 years.  Leighanna is represented by galleries & museums across the country and her work has been published in numerous books & magazines. “I love to create, to hunt for things to create with & to share my creativity with others.  It’s what I live for, it’s my oxygen.” Leighanna grew up in a small town in upstate NY and has spent most of the past 20 years in New Mexico. She currently resides in Taos NM with her best friends, Thomas, Lily &  Sam.

Kit Fee: $25, All Levels, Technique and Project Class, Maximum Class Size 15 Students

guardians_4_smIn this workshop you will learn how to make an eclectic free standing figurative assemblage, starting with only two pieces of wood and a few of your favorite treasures!

You will learn the nuts and bolts of assemblage, composition, cold connection, and how to unite found objects to create a cohesive piece of art.  You will learn a cool new way to distress wood surface.  I will teach you how to make beautiful clay faces, and how to make a mold of just about anything.

We will drill, sand, carve, paint, sculpt, problem solve, punch and distress.  But most importantly, we will have a blast!

Breath new life into your found treasure and join us for a fun day of constructing these awesome, one of a kind assemblages!

Supply List:

For the best class experience, it is very important to bring exactly what is listed on the supply list.  Please gather your supplies early, since you might have to order some things online.  If you have trouble finding anything or if you have any questions, please contact Leighanna at least two weeks prior to class.

  • 1 or 2 paint brushes, 1 detail brush
  • Crafter’s Pick, the Ultimate Glue, small 2oz bottle,
  • Chalk paint 4 oz of your favorite color(s)
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • A variety of your favorite found objects.  Think body, legs, arms.
  • Optional supplies:
    • A craft heat gun
    • A metal punch if you have one
    • A drill with several small bits ( we will be doing a lot of drilling, Leighanna supplies two drills, AnLiNa Designs will supply one drill, but please bring your own, if you can

Kit includes hand-made, free-standing base components, one hand-made clay face (if you work fast and want to make 2 shrines, Leighanna will have extras for sale.  Please let AnLiNa Designs know in advance), distressing medium, most tools, and all hardware.

Leighanna Light Vintage Metal Deck

In this workshop, we will transform ordinary metal into a fabulous, thick, chunky, beautfilly embellished deck of cards!  Each studnt will receive 10 flat pieces of metal, each 6″x3″, to transform into a beautiful work of art.  We will explore a variety of ways to use and distress metal, cloth, paper, found objects, and you will learn a plethora of new ideas and techniques!  You will receive in depth instruction on how to work with metal include:

  • applying texture to metal
  • metal transfer
  • a variety of ways to forge, distress and mark metal
  • how to add ink and paint as a design element
  • how to use patina to change the look of the metal
  • alternative ways to attach objects to your work without using glue
  • how to correctly use tools and products, including the doming block and a few new surprises
  • how to master object placement, composition and problem solving
  • how to add texture and depth to your work
  • composition and design concepts
  • a variety of new surface design techniques
  • how to create a cohesive themed project

You will leave with a unique, beautifully embellished art deck that can be bound by decorative wire or transformed into a book or sculpture if you wish.

Supply List:

  • White Gesso, 6 oz minimum, Utrecht Artists Acrylic Gesso, White Medium Body, available at Dick Blick.  Any brand will work, but the thick Utrecht gesso is best for this project.
  • PVA Glue, 4 oz
  • Fluid Matte Medium, small 40z bottle
  • Sophisticated Finishes/Modern Options Patina, 4oz Blue or Green, your choise.  Be sure to buy the matching copper surfacer, patina will not work without it!
  • Small images, a wide veriety to choose from, 6″x3″ or smaller
  • Small found bojects, good variety to embellish your deck
  • Scissors
  • A few medium size paint brushes
  • Brads, Eyelets and Wire, a variety of sizes and colors
  • two or three of your favorite Acrylic Paints.   These cards are small, so you don’t need a lot.  If everyone brings a small amount of 2 or 3 colors and is willing to share, there should be plenty to go around.
  • Optional Supplies:
    • A heat gun
    • A Crop-a-Dile or a metal punch
    • Gilders Paste, a wax-based medium to alter the color of metal
    • Alcohol ink, Pinata or Ranger brand

Kit includes 10 pieces of pre-cut metal, wire, images, sandpaper, a nice package of ephemera and use of instructors tools, stamps paints paper and consumables.
